Stalag IVB: country lists

Soviet Union. The memorial Ehrenhain Zeithain has a Death register of Soviet prisoners of war with the names of more than 23000 POWs online, who died in camp Zeithain. Most of the POWs in camp Zeithain have been in Stalag IVB, too. More details on the Soviet POWs in Stalag IVB including the scanned register cards can be researched on OBD Memorial using the names from Zeithain (enter only surname and first name with paste and copy!). Searching for the keyword "шталаг IV B" at OBD Memorial provides also details of Soviet POWs who have not been in camp Zeithain (max. 1000 per search.)

Soviet Union. The documentation office Dresden of the foundation "Stiftung Sächsische Gedenkstätten" holds a list of Soviet prisoners of war buried in Saxony. The register cards of the German Army have been scanned are online available for many of the victims. A large number of them have been in Stalag IVB in Mühlberg.

Soviet Union. About 800 Soviet prisoners in Stalag IVB are listed the German files as "civilians". There were dedicated to forced labour for years. Here is a list with the names of these persons. Some of the youngest of them:

Denmark. On 18.12.1944 between 1000 and 1600 Danish policemen coming from concentration camp Buchenwald arrived in Stalag IVB near Mühlberg, "in sad condition". Few of the victims are listed here and here.

• Jan Puchała, 1904 – 1946, staff sergeant in the Polish Border Guard, from Kępno. He was arrested in Stalag IVB from 1939-1942, then "released" into forced labour from 1942-1945 in Seedorf near Genthin. He died in 1946 from his severe injuries.

• Gerrit Riezebos, 1915 – † 19.8.1944, sergeant in the Dutch Army, underground fighter

• Herb Sheaner, b. 1925, served as a private first class in Company G, 422nd Regiment of the 106th Infantry Division of the US Army; .captured in the Battle of the Bulge, after two weeks in Stalag IVB he was sent to a branch camp near Merseburg for forced labour. His extensive report is reproduce here with kind permission.

• Claude Simon - (1913-2005) French novelist, Nobel laureate

• Zbigniew Stypułkowski – (1904-1979) Polish politician, lawyer and member of parliament, was captured by the Germans in 1939 and brought to Stalag IVB, later to Moosburg. 1940 released. Worked in the Polish underground, in March 1945 imprisoned by the NKVD and submitted to a stage trial in Moscow. In october 1945 released, he fled to Western Europe and worked for the Polish exile government.

Soviet special camp 1: regional lists

The total number of imprisoned persons in Soviet special camps is estimated to be between 122.000 and 180.000, varying in different sources. There is no information how many persons were imprisoned in a certain region or in a certain municipality. Here we try to compile a list from the several single or distributed data that have been published. The general availability of these data will help to diminish myths and wrong prejudice on persons in Soviet special camps. Do you have any information on the number of NKVD prisoners in a special village or town? How many of them died in the Soviet camps?

The following lists are researched with best available knowledge. In most cases, they are incomplete and require further local regional research in order to clarify biographies.

• Total list with a survey of countries (Länder), districts (Kreise) and municipalities (Gemeinden) of the Soviet occupied zone

• Region Borna: list of 36 victims and 107 prisoners.

• Detailed list of 78 victims of Soviet special camps from Landkreis Delitzsch, compiled and commented by L. Freiberg, Stadtarchiv Delitzsch

• Elbenau (part of municipality Schönebeck/Salzlandkreis): list of 4 victims. Incomplete list.

• Elsterberg/Vogtland: List of 54 imprisoned inhabitants, among them many teenagers

• List of 9 victims and 11 imprisoned from Falkenhain near Wurzen

• Liste with the names of 685 imprisoned and deported persons from the region Finsterwalde, the data relate to the files of the regional museum Kreismuseum Finsterwalde. A number of the small pictures are taken from the manuscript Zur Geschichte des sowjetischen Speziallagers Nr. 6 in Jamlitz 1945-1947 by Andreas Weigelt (Brandenburgische Historische Hefte 16, 2001). Other pictures come from Wikipedia or other sources. Clicking on the image leads in most cases to the source document.

The character ' †' indicates that the person died in a Soviet special camp. If not indicated otherwise, the person died in camp Mühlberg.
